SURAH AL MAEDAH 1 - 50

*QURAN TAFSIR ( QURAN AS IT EXPLAIN ITSELF)*

*In the name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful.*

*5:1. O you who believe, you shall fulfill your covenants. Permitted for you to eat are the livestock, except those specifically prohibited herein. You shall not permit hunting throughout Hajj pilgrimage. Allah decrees whatever He wills.*

*[Baheema-tul-An’aam = The herbivorous cattle = Plant-eating quadrupeds = Livestock.*

*5:3.  Prohibited for you are animals that die of themselves, blood, the meat of pigs, and animals dedicated to other than Allah. (Animals that die of themselves include those) strangled, struck with an object, fallen from a height, gored, attacked by a wild animal - unless you save your animal before it dies - and animals sacrificed on altars. Also prohibited is dividing the meat through a game of chance; this is an abomination. Today, the disbelievers have given up concerning (the eradication of) your religion; do not fear them and fear Me instead. Today, I have completed your religion, perfected My blessing upon you, and I have decreed Submission as the religion for you. If one is forced by famine (to eat prohibited food), without being deliberately sinful, then Allah is Forgiver, Merciful.*

*2:173. He only prohibits for you the eating of animals that die of themselves (without human interference), blood, the meat of pigs, and animals dedicated to other than Allah. If one is forced (to eat these), without being malicious or deliberate, he incurs no sin. Allah is Forgiver, Most Merciful.]*

*5:2.  O you who believe, do not violate the rites instituted by Allah, nor the Sacred Months, nor the animals to be offered, nor the garlands marking them, nor the people who head for the Sacred Shrine seeking blessings from their Rabb and approval. Once you complete the pilgrimage, you may hunt. Do not be provoked into aggression by your hatred of people who once prevented you from going to the Sacred Masjid Al Haram (48:25). You shall cooperate in matters of righteousness and piety; do not cooperate in matters that are sinful and evil. You shall observe Allah. Allah is strict in enforcing retribution.*

*[Mayitah = Carrion = Dead meat = An animal that dies of itself.*

*Azlaam = Dividing eating portions by picking or shooting arrows = In other contexts Azlaam also includes the conjecture of foretelling the future = Raffle = Lottery = Divining arrows = Clairvoyance = Dividing things or time for one another through randomly picking up slips of paper.*

*Deen = System of Life = The Law.*

*2:173.  He only prohibits for you the eating of animals that die of themselves (without human interference), blood, the meat of pigs, and animals dedicated to other than Allah. If one is forced (to eat these), without being malicious or deliberate, he incurs no sin. Allah is Forgiver, Most Merciful.*

*2:185. Ramadan is the month during which the Quran was revealed, providing guidance for the people, clear teachings, and the statute book. Those of you who witness this month shall fast therein. Those who are ill or traveling may substitute the same number of other days. Allah wishes for you convenience, not hardship, that you may fulfill your obligations, and to glorify Allah for guiding you, and to express your appreciation.*

*2:219. They ask you about intoxicants and gambling: say, "In them there is a gross sin, and some benefits for the people. But their sinfulness far outweighs their benefit." They also ask you what to give to charity: say, "The excess." Allah thus clarifies the revelations for you, that you may reflect.

*5:90. O you who believe, intoxicants, and gambling, and the altars of idols, and the games of chance are abominations of the devil; you shall avoid them, that you may succeed.]*

*5:4 They consult you concerning what is lawful for them; say, "Lawful for you are all good things, including what trained dogs and falcons catch for you." You train them according to Allah teachings. You may eat what they catch for you, and mention Allah name thereupon. You shall observe Allah. Allah is most efficient in reckoning.*

*5:5. Today, all good food is made lawful for you. The food of the people of the scripture is lawful for you, [and your food is lawful for them]. Also, you may marry the chaste women among the believers, as well as the chaste women among the followers of previous scripture, provided you pay them their wages. You shall maintain chastity, not committing adultery, nor taking secret lovers(It must be an honest wedlock4:24). Anyone who rejects faith, all his work will be in vain, and in the Hereafter he will be with the losers.*

*[In between the lines, Muslim women are allowed to marry Muslim men only]*

*5:6. Believers! When you stand up for Prayer wash your faces and your hands up to the elbows, and wipe your heads, and wash your feet up to the ankles. And if you are in the state of ritual impurity, purify yourselves (by taking a bath). But if you are either ill, travelling, have satisfied a want of nature or have had contact with women and find no water then have recourse to clean earth and wipe your faces and your hands therewith. Allah does not want to lay any hardship upon you; rather He wants to purify you and complete His favours upon you so that you may give thanks.*

*[4:43. Believers! Do not draw near to the Prayer while you are intoxicated until you know what you are saying nor while you are defiled - save when you are travelling - until you have washed yourselves. If you are either ill or travelling or have satisfied a want of nature or have had contact with women and can find no water, then betake yourselves to pure earth, passing with it lightly over your face and your hands. Surely Allah is All-Relenting, All-Forgiving.*

*Wudhu = Ablution will help prepare mentally for congregational prayer. Tayammum= Dry ablution]*

*5:7. Remember Allah's favour upon you and His covenant which He made with you when you said: 'We have heard and we obey.' So do fear Allah. Allah has full knowledge even of that which is hidden in the breasts of people.*

*[1:4-5. The Master of the Day of Recompense.*

*You alone do we worship, and You alone do we turn for help.]*

*5:8. Believers! Be upright bearers of witness for Allah, and do not let the enmity of any people move you to deviate from justice. Act justly, that is nearer to God-fearing. And fear Allah. Surely Allah is well aware of what you do.*

*5:9. Allah has promised those who believe and do good works that they will have forgiveness from sins and a great reward.*

*5:10. As for those who disbelieve and give the lie to Our signs, they are destined for the Blazing Flame.*

*5:11.  O you who believe! Remember (the) Favor (of) Allah upon you when determined a people that they stretch towards you their hands, but He restrained their hands from you. And fear Allah. And upon Allah so let put the trust the believers.*

*5:12.  And certainly took Allah a Covenant (from the) Children (of) Israel and We appointed among them two (and) ten (i.e twelve) leaders. And said Allah, "Indeed, I (am) with you, if you establish the prayer and give the zakah and you believe in My Messengers and you assist them and you loan (to) Allah a loan goodly, surely I will remove from you your evil deeds and I will surely admit you (to) gardens flow from underneath them the rivers. But whoever disbelieved after that among you, then certainly he strayed (from) the way, the right.*

*[Example (of) those who spend their wealth in (the) way (of) Allah, (is) like a grain which grows seven ears, in each ear hundred grain(s). And Allah gives manifold to whom He wills. And Allah (is) All-Encompassing, All-Knowing.]*

*5:13  So for their breaking (of) their covenant We cursed them and We made their hearts hard. They distort the words from their places, and forgot a part of what they were reminded of [it]. And not you will cease to discover of treachery from them except a few of them. But forgive them and overlook. Indeed, Allah loves the good-doers.*

*5:14  And from those who said, Indeed we (are) Nazarenes (Christians)," We took their covenant; but they forgot a part of what they were reminded of [it]. So We aroused between them [the] enmity and [the] hatred till (the) Day (of) the Resurrection. And soon will inform them Allah of what they used to do.*

*[Rivalry based upon Sectarianism and Nationalism, a natural consequence of deviating from the True Message, whether people call themselves Jews, Christians or Muslims.]*

*5:15  O People (of) the Book! Surely has come to you Our Messenger making clear to you much of what you used to conceal of the Scripture and overlooking of much. Surely has come to you from Allah a light and a Book clear.*

*5:16. Guides with it Allah (those) who seek His pleasure (to the) ways (of) the peace, and brings them out from the darknessess to the light by His permission, and guides them to (the) way, straight.*

*5:17.  Certainly disbelieved - those who said, "Indeed, Allah, He (is) the Messiah, son (of) Maryam." Say, "Then who has power against Allah (in) anything if He intends to destroy the Messiah, son (of) Maryam, and his mother and whoever (is) in the earth all?" And for Allah (is the) dominion (of) the heavens and the earth and what (is) between both of them. He creates what He wills, and Allah (is) on every thing All-Powerful.*

*5:18  And said, the Jews and the Christians "We (are) (the) children (of) Allah and His beloved." Say, "Then why (does He) punish you for your sins?" Nay, you (are) human beings from among (those) He created. He forgives [for] whom He wills and punishes whom He wills. And for Allah (is the) dominion (of) the heavens and the earth and whatever (is) between them, and to Him (is) the final return.*

*5:19  O People (of) the Book! Surely has come to you Our Messenger, he makes clear to you [on] (after) an interval (of cessation) of the Messengers, lest you say "Not (has) come to us any bearer of glad tidings and not a warner." But surely has come to you a bearer of glad tidings and a warner. And Allah (is) on every thing All-Powerful.*

*5:20.  And when said Musa to his people, "O my people, remember (the) Favor (of) Allah upon you when He placed among you Prophets and made you kings and He gave you what not He (had) given (to) anyone from the worlds.*

*5:21  "O my people! Enter the sacred land  which has ordained Allah for you and (do) not turn on your backs, then you will turn back (as) losers."*

*[Sacred Land = Can’aan = Syria-Palestine.*

*2:125. And when We made the House a place of return for mankind and (a place of) security and (said), "Take [from] (the) standing place (of) Ibrahim, (as) a place of prayer." And We made a covenant with Ibrahim and Ismail [that], "[You both] purify My House for those who circumambulate and those who devote and those who bow down those who prostrate.*

*6:137. And likewise made pleasing to many of the polytheists - (the) killing (of) their children - their partners - so that they may ruin them and that they make confusing to them their religion. And if (had) willed Allah not they (would) have done so. So leave them and what they invent.*

*12:58. And came (the) brothers (of) Yusuf and they entered upon him; and he recognized them, but they not knew him.*

*12:94.And when departed the caravan, said their father, "Indeed, I [I] find (the) smell (of) Yusuf, if not that you think me weakened in mind."*

*21:71.And We delivered him and Lut to the land which We (had) blessed [in it] for the worlds.*

*23:50.  And We made (the) son (of) Maryam and his mother a Sign, and We sheltered them to a high ground, full (of) tranquility and water springs.*

*26:59.Thus. And We caused to inherit them (the) Children (of) Israel.*

*29:26.And believed [in] him Lut, and he said, "Indeed I (am) emigrating to my Rabb. Indeed, He [He] (is) the All-Mighty, the All-Wise."*

*30:3.In (the) nearest land. But they, from after their defeat, will overcome.*

*44:3. Indeed, We revealed it in a Night Blessed. Indeed, We [We] are (ever) warning.]*

*5:22  They said, "O Musa! Indeed, in it (are) people (of) tyrannical strength and indeed, we never will enter it until they leave from it, and if they leave [from] it then certainly we (will) enter (it)."*

*5:23  Said two men from those who feared (Allah), had Favored Allah [on] both of them, "Enter upon them (through) the gate then when you have entered it then indeed, you (will be) victorious. And upon Allah then put your trust if you are believers.*

*5:24  They said, O Musa! Indeed, we never will enter it, ever, for as long as they are in it. So go you and your Rabb and you both fight. Indeed, we are [here] sitting."*

5:25  He said "O my Rabb! Indeed, I (do) not (have) power except (over) myself and my brother, so (make a) separation between us and between the people the defiantly disobedient".*

*5:26. (Allah) said, "Then indeed it (will be) forbidden to them (for) forty years, they will wander in the earth. So (do) not grieve over the people the defiantly disobedient."*

*[Among mankind there always have been those who submit, and those who transgress. The Children of Israel enjoyed great Divine blessings, but for their repeated transgressions they were chastised*

*2:259.Or like the one who passed by a township, and it (had) overturned on its roofs. He said, "How (will) bring to life this (town) Allah after its death?" Then he was made to die (by) Allah (for) a hundred year(s), then He raised him. He said, "How long (have) you remained?" He said, "I remained (for) a day or a part (of) a day." He said, "Nay, you (have) remained one hundred year(s). Then look at your food and your drink, (they did) not change with time, and look at your donkey, and We will make you a sign for the people. And look at the bones how We raise them, then We cover them (with) flesh." Then when became clear to him, he said, "I know that Allah (is) on every thing All-Powerful."*

*17:5. So when came (the) promise (for) the first of the two, We raised against you servants of Ours Possessor those of military might great and they entered the inner most part (of) the homes, and (it) was a promise fulfilled.*

*and Allah bounty of Prophethood, in His Infinite wisdom, moved away from the Children of Israel to the Children of Ishmael, among whom was raised Muhammad, the Final Prophet/Messenger of Allah.*

*The dire opposition of Jews and Christians to the Final Messenger is alluded to in the following verses, in reference to the famous story of the two brothers, Abel Haabeel and Cain Qaabeel]*

*5:27  And recite to them the story (of) two sons (of) Adam, in truth, when both offered a sacrifice, and it was accepted from one of them and not was accepted from the other. Said (the latter), "Surely I will kill you." Said (the former), "Only accepts Allah from the righteous).*

[Every action of the righteous is readily accepted]*

*5:28  If you stretch towards me your hand to kill me, not I will stretch my hand towards you to kill you, indeed I fear Allah (the) Rabb (of) the worlds."*

*5:29  "Indeed, I wish that you be laden with my sin and your sin so you will be among (the) companions (of) the Fire, and that (is the) recompense (of) the wrong-doers."*

*[Two violations or sins: First, of slaying me, and second, of slaying the person in you. ]*

*5:30  Then prompted to him his soul (to) kill his brother, so he killed him and became of the losers.*

*5:31.  Then sent Allah a crow, it (was) scratching in the earth to show him how to cover (the) dead body (of) his brother. He said, "Woe to me! Am I unable that I can be like this [the] crow and hide (the) dead body (of) my brother?" Then he became of the regretful.*

*[Sauaat = Imperfections, faults. Uwaari sauaat = Conceal others' faults = Cover a naked body.*

*7:20.  Then whispered to both of them the Shaitaan to make apparent to both of them what was concealed from both of them of their shame. And he said, "(Did) not forbid you both your Rabb from this [the] tree except that you two become Angels or you two become of the immortals."]*

*5:32  From time that, We ordained on (the) Children (of) Israel that he who kills a soul other than (for) a soul or (for) spreading corruption in the earth then (it) is as if he has killed [the] mankind all. and whoever saves it then (it) is as if he has saved [the] mankind all. And surely came to them Our Messengers with clear Signs yet, indeed, many of them after that in the earth (are) surely those who commit excesses.*

*5:33  Only (the) recompense (for) those who wage war (against) Allah and His Messenger and strive in the earth spreading corruption (is) that they be killed or they be crucified or be cut off their hands and their feet of opposite sides or they be exiled from the land. That (is) for them disgrace in the world and for them in the Hereafter (is) a punishment great.*

*[Fasaad = Bloody crimes = Spreading corruption in the land = Creating disorder. ‘Allah and His Messenger’. None can physically fight against Allah, and the Messenger was a mortal man. So, Allah and the Messenger denote the Central Authority of the Islamic State. Waging war against Allah and the Messenger would mean rebellion against the Islamic State. ‘Severing the hands and feet’ may also be understood as cutting of their ability to create Fasaad.*

*5:38. And (for) the male thief and the female thief - [then] cut off their hands (as) a recompense for what they earned (as) an exemplary (punishment) from Allah. And Allah (is) All-Mighty, All-Wise.*

*12:31. So when she heard of their scheming, she sent for them and she prepared for them a banquet and she gave each one of them a knife and she said, "Come out before them." Then when they saw him they greatly admired him, and cut their hands, they said, "Forbid Allah, not (is) this a man not (is) this but an angel noble."*

*‘Banishing from the land’ may indicate exile or imprisonment for life. If they present to the authorities before getting arrested, they could be pardoned.

4:64. And not We sent any Messenger except to be obeyed by (the) permission (of) Allah. And if [that] they, when they wronged themselves, (had) come to you and asked forgiveness (of) Allah, and asked forgiveness for them the Messenger, surely they would have found Allah Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful]*

*5:34  Except those who repent from before that you overpower [over] them, then know that Allah (is) Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful.*

*[Peace will prevail when the righteous become more powerful than the guilty]*

*5:35  O you who believe! Fear Allah and seek towards Him the means and strive hard in His way, so that you may succeed.*

*[Waseelah = Seeking earnestly = Applying the mind and heart to reach a noble goal.*

*2:186.  And when ask you My servants about Me, then indeed I am near. I respond (to the) invocation (of) the supplicant when he calls Me. So let them respond to Me and let them believe in Me, so that they may (be) led aright. and*

*17:57. Those whom they call, seek to their Rabb  the means of access, which of them (is) nearest, and they hope (for) His mercy and fear His punishment. Indeed, (the) punishment (of) your Rabb is (ever) feared.*

*are many of the verses that negate the erroneous concept of "Waseelah" denoting some saints, sages or even Prophets interceding on behalf of people.]*

*5:36  Indeed, those who disbelieve, if that for them (is) what (is) in the earth all and the like of it with it, to ransom themselves with it, from (the) punishment (of the) Day (of) the Resurrection, not will be accepted from them, and for them (is) a punishment painful.*

*5:37  They will wish that they come out of the Fire but not they will come out of it. And for them (is) a punishment lasting.*

*5:38  And (for) the male thief and the female thief - [then] cut off their hands (as) a recompense for what they earned (as) an exemplary (punishment) from Allah. And Allah (is) All-Mighty, All-Wise.*

*[As-Saariq = Habitual thief. Nakala = Deterrent. For Qat’a yadd, the so-called cutting of hand,*

*12:31. So when she heard of their scheming, she sent for them and she prepared for them a banquet and she gave each one of them a knife and she said, "Come out before them." Then when they saw him they greatly admired him, and cut their hands, they said, "Forbid Allah, not (is) this a man not (is) this but an angel noble." about Egyptian women ‘cutting their hands’. Yadd = Hand = Ability = Power.*

*‘Allah hand’ at many places in the Qur’an, of course, denotes His Power and authority. So, consider all circumstances with wisdom, and take measures to prevent this crime in the society.*

*5:39.But whoever repented from after his wrongdoing and reforms, then indeed, Allah will turn in forgiveness to him. Indeed, Allah (is) Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful.*

*for repentance and making amends. If the hand is cut off, where is the room for mercy?

*Qur’anic laws are much more rational than Biblical injunctions.*

*Here is the reference from Mathew Chapter 18, verses 8-9, The New King James Version. “And if your hand or foot causes you to sin, cut it off and cast it from you. It is better for you to enter into life lame or maimed, rather than having two hands or two feet, to be cast into the everlasting fire. And if your eye causes you to sin, pluck it out and cast it from you. It is better for you to enter into life with one eye, rather than having two eyes, to be cast into hell fire.”*

Can anyone pluck out his own eye?It appears that Muslim translators of the Qur’an rendered Qat'a literally under Biblical influence.]*

*5:39  But whoever repented from after his wrongdoing and reforms, then indeed, Allah will turn in forgiveness to him. Indeed, Allah (is) Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful.*

*[ If the hand is cut off, what about making amends, pardon and mercy?]*

*5:40  Do not you know that Allah, to Him (belongs) (the) dominion (of) the heavens and the earth? He punishes whom He wills and He forgives [to] whom He wills. And Allah (is) on every thing All-Powerful.*

*5:41  O Messenger! Not let grieve you those who hasten in (to) [the] disbelief - of those who said, "We believe" with their mouths and not believe their hearts, and from those who (are) Jews. They (are) listeners to falsehood, (and) listeners for people other, (who have) not come to you. They distort the words from after their context, saying, "If you are given this [so] take it but if not you are given it then beware." And (for) whom intends Allah his trial, then never will you have power for him against Allah anything. Those (are) the ones never intends Allah that He purifies their hearts. For them in the world (is) disgrace and for them in the Hereafter (is) a punishment great.*

*[This verse points to taking allies on a national scale, and not to individual friendship.*

*60:7.Perhaps Allah [that] will put between you and between those (to) whom you have been enemies, among them love. And Allah (is) All-Powerful. And Allah (is) Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful.]*

*5:42  Listeners to [the] falsehood, devourers of the forbidden. So if they come to you then judge between them or turn away from them. And if you turn away from them, then never will they harm you (in) anything. And if you judge, then judge between them with [the] justice. Indeed, Allah loves the ones who are just.*

*5:43  But how can they appoint you a judge while they (have) with them the Taurat, in it (is the) Command (of) Allah? Then they turn away from after that, and not those (are) the believers.*

*5:44  Indeed, We revealed the Taurat in it (was) Guidance and light; judged by it the Prophets, those who had submitted (to Allah) for those who were Jews, and the Rabbis, and the scholars, with what they were entrusted of (the) Book (of) Allah and they were to it witnesses. So (do) not fear the people but fear Me, and (do) not sell My Verses (for) a price, little. And whoever (does) not judge by what has revealed Allah, then those [they] (are) the disbelievers (kafiroon).*

*5:45  And We ordained for them in it that - the life for the life, and the eye for the eye, and the nose for the nose, and the ear for the ear, and the tooth for the tooth, and (for) wounds (is) retribution. But whoever gives charity with it, then it is an expiation for him. And whoever (does) not judge by what has revealed Allah, then those [they] (are) the wrongdoers(Zalimoon).*

*5:46.  We followed their teaching with Isa  the son of Mariyum authenticating what was present with him of the Torah. We gave him the Injeel, in it is guidance and light, and to authenticate what is present with him of the Torah, and a guidance and lesson for the righteous.*

*[2:101.When a messenger came to them from Allah, authenticating what was with them, a group of those who had already received the book placed Allah book behind their backs as if they did not know.*

*3:78. From amongst them is a group that twists their tongues with the book so that you may count it from the book, while it is not from the book, and they say it is from Allah while it is not from Allah, and they knowingly say lies about Allah.]*

*5:47.  Let the people of the Injeel judge with what Allah has sent down in it. Whoever does not judge by what Allah has sent down, then these are the vile ones(‘Faasiqoon’).*

*5:48.  We have sent down to you the book with truth, authenticating what is present of the book and superseding it. So judge between them by what Allah has sent down, and do not follow their desires from what has come to you of the truth. For each of you We have made laws, a structure. Had Allah willed, He would have made you all one nation, but He tests you with what He has given you, so advance the good deeds. To Allah you will return all of you, and He will inform you regarding that in which you dispute.*

*[2:101.Some of them say, "Our Rabb, give us good in this world, and good in the Hereafter, and spare us from the retribution of the fire."*

*2:148. To each is a direction that he will take, so you shall race towards good deeds. Wherever you may be, Allah will bring you all together. Allah is capable of all things.*

*3:78. From amongst them is a group that twists their tongues with the book so that you may count it from the book, while it is not from the book, and they say it is from Allah while it is not from Allah, and they knowingly say lies about Allah.*

*21:92. This is your nation, one nation, and I am your Rabb so serve Me.*

*23:52. "This is your nation, one nation, and I am your Rabb so be aware."*

*Muhaimin = Watcher. Shari’ah = Evolving trends of a community = Rites. Minhaaj = A traced-out way = A set of laws. ‘min-al-kitab’ = From or remaining from the scripture.]*

5:49 You should rule among them by what Allah has sent down, and do not follow their wishes, and beware lest they divert you away from some of what Allah has sent down to you. If they turn away, then know that Allah wants to inflict them with some of their sins. Indeed, many among the people are corrupt.*

5:50. Is it the judgment of the days of ignorance that they seek? Who is better than Allah as a judge for a people that comprehend?
